TIRIOLO - GIRIFALCO

Olive trees near Girifalco

TIRIOLO - GIRIFALCO

The route starts from Tiriolo with a long descent through a landscape of high and low hills with chestnut, turkey oak and olive trees, interspersed with eucalyptus and prickly pear plants. At km 6.4, we reach the village of Settingiano (170 m) and continue downhill towards the Gola and Sella di Marcellinara, at the narrowest point of the Italian peninsula, where the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas are just 30 K apart. From here, the Ciclovia continues in the direction of Sarrottino and Martelletto and then begins the sunny and demanding climb to Caraffa di Catanzaro (358 m), with gradients that at times touch 11% and sweeping views of the Corace Valley. Having reached Caraffa at 19.8 km, an Arbëreshe village founded in the mid-15th century, the cycle route continues slightly downhill in the direction of Girifalco through an area with many farms and cultivated fields. At km 27.7, the route begins to climb again with gradients approaching 8% until it crosses olive groves leading to Girifalco (446 m), which is reached shortly thereafter at km 31. The town, located on the slopes of Mount Covello, at the gateway to the Serre Park, has medieval origins and among its most valuable monuments is the mythical 'Devil's Fountain'.

Girifalco e Monte Covello

Useful information

KEY FACTS

climate

Winters can be snowy on the peaks. However, roads and accommodation facilities are open and accessible. If you’re not afraid of winter weather riding, the Parks cycle network welcomes you even in the cold season. On this stage, it is preferable to avoid the stretch from Settingiano to Girifalco during the sunniest hours.

Food, drink and accommodation

Throughout the route you’ll find farmhouses (agriturismi), B&Bs and guesthouses. The towns and villages located along the ride offer visitors Italian restaurants and trattorie, where you can enjoy authentic cuisine and typical dishes. The cycle network mainly crosses woodlands and green areas, where water sources are always available; but on this stage, before tackling the stretch from Settingiano to Girifalco, it is a good idea to fill your water bottles.

Clothing

Cycling gear varies depending on the season. In autumn and winter, it’s important to use the right gear to keep you dry and warm on rides, as the temperatures can be very cold in the mountains; in spring, you don’t need thermal gear but don’t forget to wear the right windproof and waterproof clothing. In summer, you can wear a t-shirt and bermuda shorts, but always bring a jacket for high-altitude rides.

  • It is recommended to use a bike suitable for long distances, a gravel or mountain bike, also with pedal assistance. It may be appropriate to fit off-road (or mixed) tyres in the case of gravel. Although the route is on asphalt, it is a good idea to provide a set-up that allows you to safely tackle sections in the woods that may have mud and gravel in bad weather.

  • If you want to travel with a tent, you can stay in tent camping sites or campsites, agritourism and bivouac areas. To learn more please visit the Parks’ websites.
